Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you use only sunflower seeds?

Sunflower seeds are a forgotten superfood. They are packed with nutrition and have a relatively mild and pleasant taste compared to other seeds. Their delicate non-offensive taste also makes them easy to incorporate into a wide variety of food and drink.

Sunflower seeds are high in calories, so will they make me fat?

Sunflower seeds are high in calories mainly due to the healthy fats they contain. However, “a calorie is not a calorie”. A calorie of nutrient-dense sunflower seeds has a different effect on the body compared to a calorie of an unhealthy snack bar for example. In fact, sunflower seeds can aid your weight loss journey. That said, remember these are snacks so don’t go overboard 😊

Are sunflower seeds high in fat and therefore bad for you?

Sunflower seeds are high in healthy fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats) which are beneficial for heart health and much more.

Are your sunflower seeds roasted?

Yes. They are very lightly toasted for taste, but just enough to retain all their nutritional goodness.

Do you use artificial colours, preservatives or flavourings?

Absolutely not.

All are ingredients are 100% natural with nothing artificial whatsoever.

Do your snacks have added sugar?

Yes, we are transparent about this.

Two of our snacks have added sugar: Cacao-Coated Sunflower Seeds and Maca-Coated Sunflower Seeds.

If you are a purist and wouldn’t accept any added sugar whatsoever, you can opt for our Baobab and Moringa range.

We use 100% unrefined cacao powder for our cacao-Coated range.

100% unrefined cacao is unprocessed and is the healthiest form of cacao available.

However, it has a strong bitter taste due to its health benefiting polyphenols.

The small amount of coconut sugar we use helps moderate this bitterness so you can enjoy its health benefits.

We add date sugar to our maca range to give it a warm slightly sweet and nutty flavour.

We find that this enhances maca’s flavour together with the nuttiness from the sunflower seeds.

Despite the label no added sugar, most snacks on the market have added sugar disguised in one form or another.

Some snacks use fruit juice concentrates, purees and nectars which are essentially processed sugars.

Is coconut sugar the same as white/table sugar?

Coconut sugar is a natural sugar made from the sap of coconut palm trees.

It is a minimally processed sugar, and only involves heating the sugary liquid (sap) from the coconut plant.

Coconut sugar has a lower glycaemic index compared to table sugar, and thus better for your sugar levels.

It also contains some nutrients, as well as inulin, a soluble fibre that is beneficial for gut health.

That said, we use very small quantities in our snacks for taste.

More specifically, 3.7g of sugar per 45g pack for the cacao range and maca range.

This is a very low amount of sugar for all intents and purposes.

Last but not least, the overall effect on the body is negligible when the small quantity of sugar is paired with high protein sunflower seeds and healthy fats from the coconut oil.

Is date sugar the same as white/table sugar?

Date sugar is made from dried ground dates.

It is less processed compared to white sugar.

Date sugar is high in fibre, vitamins and minerals like magnesium, potassium, antioxidants, and more.

Do you use added sunflower oil?

Absolutely not.

Sunflower seeds contain natural oils within them that are healthy.

Sunflower oil on the other hand belongs to the category of seed oils.

The process involves heating at very high temperatures and pressures, extraction with solvents and treatment with more chemicals to improve its colour and smell.

Sunflower oil is therefore a highly processed oil which produces oxidised forms of oil.

These oxidised forms of oil negatively affect health.

I read that coconut oil contains saturated fat which is bad for you.

I read that coconut oil contains saturated fat which is bad for you.

What is Baobab Powder?

Baobab powder is obtained from the dried fruit of the baobab tree.

It is high in fibre, vitamins, minerals and health-benefiting phytonutrients.

You can read more about baobab here.

What is Maca Powder?

Maca powder is a nutrient-dense powder obtained from the maca plant.

Maca is also an adaptogen and thus helps balance the body in times of stress.

What is Moringa Powder?

Moringa powder is a nutrient-dense powder obtained from the moringa plant.

It is high in fibre, vitamins, minerals and health-benefiting phytonutrients.

You can read more about moringa here.

I read that salt is unhealthy and causes high blood pressure. Why have you got added salt in some of your snacks?

We use a very small amount of salt (0.15g per 45g pack) in our Moringa range only.

That said, your body needs salt to function properly.

Furthermore, the relationship between salt and high blood pressure is a complex one based on genetic factors that determine salt sensitivity, quality of salt and much more.

We don’t use refined table salt, but instead use small amounts of Himalayan pink salt in our Moringa range only for a non-overpowering flavour.

Himalayan pink salt contains sodium and chloride, as well as other minerals and trace elements like potassium, zinc and iron that are beneficial for health

Consequently, compared to table salt, Himalayan pink salt has a lower percentage of sodium due to other minerals present.
