The Health And Science Behind Ghuttie Seed Snacks

Ghuttie starts with a lightly toasted sunflower seed. Then a coating: cacao, maca, baobab or moringa. Each recipe is formulated by Dr Leke Asong, a GP and gut health specialist, and handcrafted in small batches in Nottinghamshire from short ingredient lists. This page sets out what goes into a pack and the reason it is there.

Why we built every recipe around the sunflower seed

Sunflower seeds are a forgotten food, and most people walk straight past them. They carry B vitamins, magnesium, plant protein, healthy fats, selenium, iron, calcium and zinc. We toast every batch very lightly, enough for the crunch, gentle enough that the nutritional goodness stays where it belongs.

Why there is sunflower seed in Ghuttie and never sunflower oil

Making sunflower oil takes very high heat, high pressure and chemical solvents, then more chemicals to fix its colour and smell. What comes out is a damaged, unstable oil. A whole sunflower seed keeps its oils locked inside, just as they grew. Ghuttie uses the seed and coats it in unrefined coconut oil. You will never find sunflower oil in a Ghuttie pack.

What fibre does once it reaches your gut

Fibre is the part of a plant your body cannot digest. It travels down to your gut, where the bacteria living there feed on it. Baobab powder is high in fibre. Date sugar is high in fibre. Coconut sugar contains inulin, a soluble fibre. Every pack is built on the whole seed, so the fibre stays intact.

Steadier energy,
fewer cravings

Protein and healthy fats in the sunflower seed slow digestion down, so you stay fuller for longer and the craving arrives later. B vitamins and magnesium help your body turn food into energy. Iron eases tiredness. Baobab's vitamin C supports your immune system. The Variety Pack holds all four coatings, so you can find the one your day needs.

What is cacao powder?

Cacao powder is made from fermented, dried, roasted and ground cacao beans. Ghuttie uses it 100% unrefined, so nothing is stripped out. That keeps the polyphenols in place, along with magnesium and iron, and it leaves a strong bitter edge. A little coconut sugar softens the bitterness. The taste hits like a deeper, earthier chocolate.

What is maca powder?

Maca powder is milled from a hardy root vegetable that grows high in the Peruvian Andes, where people have eaten it for thousands of years. Maca carries B vitamins, iron and a full sweep of plant-based amino acids. The flavour is warm, malty and faintly caramel, and a touch of date sugar brings the nuttiness of the seed forward.

What is baobab powder?

Baobab powder comes from the dried fruit of the baobab tree, often called the Tree of Life. The fruit dries naturally on the branch, so the powder keeps almost all of its nutrients. Baobab is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C in the plant world, and it carries fibre, potassium and magnesium. Tangy and citrus-bright, a little like sherbet. Tart enough to need no added sugar at all.

What is moringa powder?

Moringa powder is milled from the leaves of the moringa tree, native to parts of Africa and Asia. A handful of the dried leaf carries iron, calcium, vitamin A, antioxidants and all nine essential amino acids, which is close to unheard of in the plant kingdom. India and West Africa have used moringa for centuries. Earthy and savoury-green, like a grounded cousin of matcha, finished with 0.15g of pink Himalayan salt per 45g pack.

Frequently asked questions

Do sunflower seeds make you gain weight?

Sunflower seeds are high in calories, mostly from healthy fats. A calorie of nutrient-dense seeds behaves differently in your body from a sugary snack bar.

How many sunflower seeds should you eat in a day?

A 45g Ghuttie pack is one portion, sized as a snack. Sunflower seeds are calorie-dense, so enjoy them and avoid going overboard.

Are sunflower seeds high in fat and therefore bad for you?

Sunflower seeds are high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, the healthy kind, which are beneficial for heart health and much more.

Is coconut sugar the same as white sugar?

Coconut sugar comes from coconut palm sap, minimally processed. It has a lower glycaemic index than table sugar and contains inulin, a soluble fibre.

Is date sugar the same as white sugar?

Date sugar is dried ground dates, less processed than white sugar, and high in fibre, magnesium, potassium and antioxidants. Ghuttie uses it in maca.

Is Himalayan pink salt better for you than table salt?

Your body needs salt to function properly. Himalayan pink salt contains trace elements like potassium and iron alongside sodium, so its sodium percentage is lower.
